Leta Lawson Obituary

Leta Jane Lawson, 91, peacefully passed away on March 30, 2024 after battling dementia. She was born October 9, 1932 in Jefferson, Oklahoma to Abraham and Addie McClaflin, where she was one of nine children. Leta was raised in Pond Creek, Oklahoma where she met Eugene Haws whom she later married and birthed 4 children. They made their homestead near Hawley, Oklahoma and then later raised the family in Nash, Oklahoma. While raising her children, Leta was a homemaker as well as a cook at the Nash grade school. Leta was known for her cooking skills, specifically, chicken. Her family remembers eating fried chicken at least 3 or 4 times a week and her chicken and noodles were the best around. Leta went on to live in Enid, where she met her soulmate, Harold Lawson. She and Harold spent their time in Tahlequah opening an antique shop. Leta became a master negotiator as she and Harold would travel the US and Mexico looking for unique items. With Harolds passing in 1988, Leta returned to Enid.

Leta wore many hats in her life, to include being a hotel manager, a seamstress and being known as Gram. As a seamstress, she sewed everything from clothes to artwork to dolls. As Gram, she taught most all of her successors how to sew, to include her children, grandchildren and even her great grandchildren.

If you knew Leta, you knew there was a ‘right’ way to do just about everything. Whether it was how to fold towels, which direction your clothing should hang on a hanger, that bananas are all you need for breakfast or that a faucet was to be wiped down with a towel after each use to avoid water spots. Leta was a very particular person and she took pride in being the matriarch of the family.

Leta was proceeded in death by her father, Abraham Lincoln McClaflin; mother, Addie McClaflin; 2 brothers, Richard and Robert; and 5 sisters, Mildred, Wanda, Louise, Eileen, and Jaunita; husband, Harold Lawson; son, David Haws; daughter, Carol Haws; and one grandson, Jeff Haws. Leta is survived by her sister LaVonne Nelson; son, Donnie Haws; daughter, Janice Reid and companion Bobby King; grandchildren Cody Gattis and husband David, Amber Drennen and husband Jimi, Clint Shankle and wife Jaci, LetaJoe Haws, and Chyna Haws and 13 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 15, 2024 in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Services are under the kind guidance of the Amy Stittsworth Funeral Service.
