Darryl "Scotty" Franklin Scott

Darryl "Scotty" Franklin Scott, 74, took his final bow on January 10, 2025, in Enid, Oklahoma, after a courageous and honorable battle with poor health. Born on November 25, 1950, in Union, South Carolina, Scotty was a man whose life journey was as rich and varied as the captivating tales he loved to tell.

Scotty was the oldest of six children and often given the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings.  It was a role he served impeccably well for many years.  He attended Andrew Jackson High, Queens NY. While in high school he worked in retail. He acquired a great appreciation for fabrics and men's attire with dreams of opening his own clothing business. He joined the United States Air Force in 1969—a move that whisked him off to Vietnam and set the stage for a lifetime of dedication and learning. While serving, he earned his GED, discovering a passion for education that would accompany him throughout his life.

His educational accolades included a Bachelor's of Theology from Church of Christ (COC) Bible Training College in 1977, a Master’s in Behavioral Science from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1985, and another Bachelor's of Theology from Midwestern School of Evangelism in 2017. To say Scotty was a lifelong scholar would be an understatement - learning was his passion.

A true Renaissance man, Scotty's professional escapades were as diverse as his personal interests. Starting as the Minister for North Enid Church of Christ in 1978, he went on to become Chaplain for the Joseph Harp Correction Center and later the Charles E. "Bill" Johnson Correctional Center. His resume also included stints with the post office, probation and parole services, Department of Human Services (DHS), and the Garfield County Sheriff Office. If you needed a time management guru or just someone to encourage your potential, Scotty was your man.

Scotty's interests were as wide-ranging as his professions. Whether preaching the gospel, teaching Bible classes, or “spinning yarns”—some factual, some fantastical—Scotty had a knack for making any topic captivating. He was an avid reader who could effortlessly transition from historical epics to the latest pop culture phenomena. He also had an encyclopedic knowledge of music: from Christian hymns to classical masterpieces to all the “top hits” - his recollection of musical facts made him a human Shazam.

Above all, Scotty was a friendly soul with a warm heart, dedicated to bringing people together. A member of North Enid Church of Christ from 1978 to 2017 and later Oakwood Christian Church, Scotty lived by his lifelong message: to love your neighbor, share Christ, and live faithfully.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Gaverne Scott, their 7 children Sarah (Loren) Evans, Tana (Emmanuel) Ifarinde, Tayoni Scott, Shanel (Chinyelu) Martin, Tyson Scott, Shaylee Scott, and Taylor Scott, along with seven beloved grandchildren. His sister Donna Akins, brother Barry Akins, and aunt Agnes Brice, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of dear friends. All will continue to celebrate his legacy.

He is preceded in death by his father William Scott, dad Caodes Akins, mother Dorothy Akins, sister Valerie Scott-Gresham, brother William "Billy" Scott, brother Timothy Akins. Scotty leaves behind a loving family and a community of friends who will cherish his memory forever.
