George Eugene “Gene” Gilmore passed away on Monday, January 23,
2023, of heart failure. He died at The Living Center in Enid, OK, where
he had been a resident since July of 2021. At the time of death, he was
90 years old.
Gene was born on April 22, 1932, in Gladewater, Texas, the third of four
children born to George Ernst Gilmore and Laura Marie Enochs
Gilmore. He grew up in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and graduated from
Sand Springs High School. After graduating, he enlisted in the United
States NAVY serving as a Quartermaster Second Class aboard the USS
Cassin Young. His military awards include: Good Conduct Medal, Navy
Occupation Service Medal with “Europe” Clasp, China Service Medal
(Extended), National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and
a United Nations Medal. The USS Cassin Young, was a Fletcher-class
destroyer, and engaged in seven Pacific battles in World War II,
survived two Kamikaze hits, and served another full decade beyond her
expected lifetime. Gene served for 3 years, 11 months, and was
“Honorably” discharged in May of 1955.
After leaving the Navy, Gene received training which allowed him to
work as a surveyor. He was employed by several petroleum companies
including Williams Bros., and worked all over the United States, as well
as overseas in many countries.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; 2 siblings, Robert Gilmore
and Darlene Gilmore Rowland. He is survived by his sister, MaryAnn
Gilmore Ramage, of Lynwood, WA; by 5 children, Linda C. Gilmore
Hobson, of Enid, OK; Michael W. Gilmore, of Tulsa, OK; Carole Ann
Gilmore Dogan; William E. “Billy” Gilmore and Karen M. Gilmore
Girouard of Massachusetts. He had several grandchildren as well as
many nieces and nephews.
Gene was active at the Hillsdale Bible Church, in Hillsdale, OK, for many
years and was a faithful follower of Christ.
Per Gene’s final wishes, his body has been cremated and the remains
will be inurned during a private ceremony by his immediate family at a
later date. In lieu of condolences, the family would like donations to be
