Thomas "Tom" Cunningham Obituary

Thomas “Tom” Madison Cunningham, 72, of Burbank, Oklahoma, passed away on April 25, 2026.

Tom was born on July 26, 1953, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to John and Mary Ann Cunningham. He spent his life rooted in the Ponca City area.

Tom proudly served the community as a firefighter with the Ponca City Fire Department, retiring as a captain. After his years of service, he returned to the life he loved—being outdoors, hunting, fishing, working cattle, going to rodeos, and simply enjoying nature. If you were looking for him, there was a good chance you’d find him early in the morning at the Osage Cove fishing dock, doing what he loved most.

In his younger years, Tom was well known as one of the best pool players in Kay County. He traveled to several states competing in billiards tournaments, earning respect for both his skill and competitive spirit.

He was a man full of personality—funny, stubborn, opinionated, and set in his ways—but those who knew him best knew his heart was devoted to his family. He thought the world of his children and grandchildren and took pride in every one of them.

Tom shared a special bond with Bobby Soutter, a lifelong friend of his son who became like family. Bobby spoke with Tom daily and was often by his side—whether running around town or grabbing a meal at Cobb’s Café. Their friendship was one of loyalty, companionship, and genuine love.

Tom had many friends throughout his life, including lifelong friendships built on loyalty and mutual respect. He was the kind of man who would do anything for the people he cared about, and they would do the same for him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Ann Cunningham; his brother, Roy Cunningham; his sister, Cherie Cunningham; and his beloved dog, Pete, his loyal companion.

He is survived by his children, Lisa Marie Cunningham and Denver Scott Cunningham; his grandchildren, Lacie, Jaylin, James, Chanalie, Brianna, and “lil ol Jaxon,” as his grandpa would call him; and great-grandchildren, Ellie, Novick, Aaryn, and Elijah.

Tom’s presence, stories, and unmistakable personality will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

And just know… if the fish are biting, he’s there.

Services will be held on May 7, 2026, at 11am at NewPoint Church, located at 109 W. Hartford in Ponca City, Oklahoma. A luncheon will follow at Tom’s residence after the service.
